Channel Islands Surfboards

channelogo11 Channel Islands SurfboardsSince 1969, Channel Islands Surfboards has been dedicated to performance and quality through hard work, innovation, and originality. Over the last 38 years, Channel Islands has grown from a local grass-roots operation to a cutting edge organization, catering to the best surfers in the world. It started with hard-core surfing and quality in mind and these guidelines have brought us through three decades of constant change in the surf industry. Channel Islands will shape the new millennium with innovative design and quality as our main focus.

“The driving force behind Channel Islands Surfboards is the demand on design created by the world’s greatest surfers, allowing for the highest performance surfing possible. To provide the most dedicated surfers with the most advanced, performance designs is my passion” – Al Merrick, Designer/Shaper.

In July of 2006, Channel Islands Surfboards was acquired by Burton Corporation. This is a marriage of two like-minded companies; both being privately held organizations focused on rider-driven product and manufacturing the best possible equipment available. At a time when the surfboard industry was undergoing massive changes, the added resources brought to CI from Burton allowed us to renew our focus on design and board building in our home of Santa Barbara California. CI promptly moved to a larger facility just blocks from Rincon Del Mar, setting the foundation for developing, testing, and building boards in Santa Barbara for many years to come.

Gravy

Reminiscent of Rob Machado’s Biscuit model, The Gravy is shorter and wider than a normal shortboard, but with the addition of a few more performance characteristics. A more foiled and slightly narrower outline with a touch more rocker and fresh new look. With the nose width matching the tail width, not only are small waves fun again, but you can also still tear into them.
Designed for novice to expert and small to overhead waves.

The Robber

From the mind of Machado comes the Robber, another addition to Channel Island’s fun short/wide boards that fly. Full and fl at in front, thin and narrow in the tail, the tail is a winged swallow with spiral vee out the back. The board comes standard with hand laid Twin Finner Future Fins but also works well as a thruster.
Designed for novice to expert surfers in knee high to three feet overhead waves, you can order custom or comes in standard sizes at your local dealer.

The Tangent

The Tangent consists of a single concave and comes with the popular and versatile squash tail or round pin tail. Kelly and Al basically went off on “a tangent” when it came to this board design, trying many formulas that involved one single constant, the rocker. They manipulated countless variables in design: vee bottoms, concaves, shrinking down the size and widening the board up, changing tail temps, fi n angles, and fi n clusters all depending on the wave to be surfed.

The Whip

In landlocked neighborhoods a man’s “whip” is his customized ride, his prized mode of transportation. This is Kelly and Al’s re-worked version of the Flyer, with a few secret changes. This board is faster and more forgiving. If you’re looking for a board that excels when your shortboard seems to bog, this is the board for you. The Whip should be ridden 3-4 inches smaller than your shortboard, 1/4" wider and the same thickness.
Designed for everyday use by intermediate to expert surfers in knee to head high surf.

The Even Keel

CI’s new traditional fi sh design developed exclusively with Joe Curren. The Even Keel comes standard with double foil wood keel fi ns and 6+6/4 layups that achieve ideal swing weight and momentum through turns. The Even Keel is both progressive and traditional by taking elements from the original fi sh-speed, drive, trim and glide-and adding design elements that improve rail-to-rail transitions and increases maneuverability.
Designed for novice to expert surfers in knee high to 2 feet overhead waves.

Dumpster Diver

CI’s board designs are direct results of team feedback, so when Dane requested a short wide epoxy with single concave, narrower nose and a Rookie tail template, the 2nd Generation Dumpster Diver was created. Using the front half of our Sashimi model, and the template for the back half of our Rookie short board, the Dumpster Diver is short, wide and ugly, but fun and fast. Though still a work in progress the Dumpster Diver flies and still has enough kick in the tail to carve in the pocket.

The Pod

The Pod, an inspiration of Kelly’s, is built to fly. Deep concaves with a foiled nose and a swallow tail keep the Pod lively and maintains it’s high performance. The “snub” nose puts volume forward, allowing for maximum planing and wave catching. The wide, curvy outline makes the Pod friendly for all levels of surfers. Also available in a quad set-up, order custom or comes standard at your local dealer. Punts, turns, you can do it all, this summer favorite is designed for novice to expert in knee high to slightly overhead waves.

The MBM+

The MBM+ is an updated version of the MBM. Working closely with team riders, Al modified the bottom contours to create the MBM +. It consists of a single concave bottom with flip in the tail. The MBM+ is an integral part of CI team riders’ equipment with all the team riders that were riding the MBM now riding the MBM+ and achieving great results. The MBM+ needs to be surfed vertically in the pocket.
Designed for intermediate to expert surfers in waist high to well overhead waves.
